iMac (Flat Panel)
Introduced: January 2002
Terminated: January 2003
Description
In an entirely redesigned desk lamp-style case, the iMac (Flat Panel) also brought the G4 processor to the iMac line. There were three configurations available. The 700Mhz processor had a 40Gb hard drive, 128Mb of RAM and a tray-loading CD-RW drive. The mid-range 700Mhz model had a 40Gb hard drive, 256Mb of RAM and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. The high-end 800Mhz model had a 60Gb hard drive, 256Mb of RAM and a CD-RW/DVD-R SuperDrive. The middle and high-end models included Apple Pro Speakers standard. All models shipped with the Apple Pro Keyboard and the Apple Pro Mouse.
History
The iMac (Flat Panel) was the first complete redesign of the iMac line. It ushered the G4 processor and the SuperDrive into the consumer level. The computer was designed around the 14.1” LCD screen. It was mounted on a half-sphere base that contained the computer. The design was such that the screen could be easily moved and turned in many directions and heights. It marked the point at which Apple left behind CRT monitors.
